Samsung’s foldable smartphone

Image
By releasing the foldable smartphone in 2017, Samsung will have technology leadership in the global smartphone market, say Jeff Kim and Kevin Kim, analysts at Hyundai Securities. “This kind of leadership is expected to help Samsung to recover its damaged brand image from Note 7,” they say. Hyundai Securities forecasts Samsung will only ship around 1 to 3 million units of the foldable smartphone next year. “However, the point is not about how much the foldable phone is contributing towards Samsung’s profits,” the analysts say. “The point is that Samsung will have positive effects by leading the global phone market with the very first foldable smartphone.” Samsung pulled a similar stunt before. In 2013, Samsung released its Galaxy Round, another concept phone, just before display rival LG's G Flex, which is commercialized, so that its smartphone could be crowned the world's first with a curved display.
